Today we share a great video from Brave New Films – the first in a series on sentencing reform. It is only 5 minutes and 14 seconds and powerfully illustrates how the US became the world’s largest incarcerator.

Brave New Films Summer to End Money Bail

It’s time to end mass incarceration. Locking up more and more people for longer and longer doesn’t make us safer.

Brave New Films Sentencing Reforms, Part 1

At 4:24 seconds the film shows that when California reduced its incarcerated population by 25% – violent crime dropped 21%; when New York cut its prison population by 25% – violent crime dropped by 30%; and 1 in 10 people in the US serve sentences longer than a decade.

Sentencing reform is desperately needed in Hawai`i. The question we must ask ourselves is: “Do we want a real criminal JUSTICE system or are we satisfied with the current criminal PROCESSING system?

Hawai`i’s punitive policies are what got us into this terrible mess and we can change that. We need the political courage it will take for Hawai`i to follow the lead of Louisiana, who just enthusiastically passed a package of justice reform bills based on the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI), and other red states that have implemented JRI.

Hawai`i can do it with the right policymakers in office. REGISTER AND VOTE! We can change this sad paradigm!
